Tennessee wide receiver Vincent Perry has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2016 season, according to multiple reports that came out on Wednesday afternoon.
Perry missed all of 2015 with a knee injury after coming out of Hillsboro (Tenn.) High School in the 2015 class as an ‘athlete’ prospect.
He worked at wide receiver in fall camp before the 2015 season before going down a couple weeks before the opener against Bowling Green. Perry returned for spring practice in 2016 and showed some promise before an injury again derailed his opportunity to be on the field.
Now Tennessee will have to take a wait-and-see approach to find out if he’ll ever be able to suit up for the Vols. UT now returns just five scholarship receivers: Josh Smith, Josh Malone, Jauan Jennings, Preston Smith and Cody Blanc from last year’s roster.
Jeff George, Marquez Callaway, Tyler Byrd, LaTrell Williams and Brandon Johnson are all joining the team from the 2016 signing class, while UT continues to wait on the academic situation for signee Corey Henderson, who may be head to junior college.
