Tennessee’s 2017 recruiting class has gotten off to a slightly cooler-than-expected start, but it heated up a bit on Sunday afternoon with a massive in-state commitment.
Safety/’athlete’ Maleik Gray, one of the best players in the much-celebrated in-state crop from the state of Tennessee announced his commitment via Twitter, giving the Vols the biggest piece yet in the 2017 class, along with some momentum on the recruiting trail.

Here’s the full RTI recruiting profile for Maleik Gray:
Athlete – 2017 Class

LaVergne, Tenn. (LaVergne)
Other top offers
Alabama, Florida State, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia
Status
Gray named Florida State, Tennessee and Alabama, in that order, his top three in early May and then committed to the Vols on a visit on June 12. Gray’s teammate, receiver Princeton Fant, is also very interested in UT and that duo could be a package deal. Gray also has a good relationship with defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, and that was a big key in landing the talented in-state athlete.

How he fits
Gray has the frame and physicality of a linebacker, but the athleticism of a safety – which is his most likely home, though he could excel in college at either spot. With several key personnel losses coming after the 2016 season for the Vols, they would love for the consensus top-100 player to come be part of the group that reloads that side of the ball.
