Tennessee redshirt freshman punter Tommy Townsend plans to transfer schools and leave the Vols according to 247Sports.
Townsend redshirted last year after walk-on punter Trevor Daniel emerged as the starter and was one of the best punters in the entire NCAA last season. Daniel will be a redshirt junior in 2016, meaning it would likely be another two seasons before Townsend saw the field. It’s expected Townsend is looking to transfer to a school where he can have more immediate playing time.
Coming out of high school, Townsend was the No. 7 overall punter in the country according to 247Sports. Townsend was part of the Vols’ 2015 recruiting class. He’s the little brother of current Florida Gators punter Johnny Townsend, who will be a junior for the Gators in 2016.
No schools have emerged as of yet as potential landing places for Tommy Townsend, but the former three-star recruit should be able to go just about anywhere that needs a punter for 2017.
