It’s well-known that UT Athletics has a big impact on the local and regional economy, but some numbers released in a study on Tuesday morning were still startling.

Tennessee hired the services of Tripp Umbach, “a national leader in economic impact research and analysis,” to conduct an economic impact study beginning in 2015.

Among the key findings were that Tennessee athletics had a $618.3 million in overall economic impact on Knox County and $463.9 million in overall economic impact on the State of Tennessee (here’s some explanation of why the number is higher for the county than the state).

“The report validates an important assumption.” said Tennessee AD Dave Hart in a press release. “Tennessee Athletics provides collective benefit and tremendous contribution to businesses, governments, and individuals. Through shared commitment and sustained success, beneficiaries and stakeholders will continue to recognize these positive impacts into the foreseeable future.”
