Per a report by Jimmy Hyams, Tennessee rising sophomore running back Joe Young’s football career is over.
Joe Young suffered a neck injury sometime after the 2015 season ended, and it appears the injury is severe enough to end his playing career. Young appeared in five games for the Vols, carrying the ball 19 times for 64 yards and scored his first and only career touchdown for the Vols in the season finale against Vanderbilt.

Butch Jones recently stated on the Big Orange Caravan that Young would serve as a student coach for the upcoming season. “I would say he’s got to go through some other things, but right now we anticipate him being a student coach,” Jones said on May 17th at the caravan’s stop at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Young is expected to take a medical hardship.
