CBSSports.com is going through various positions to figure which school is “Position U” at those spots over the past decade.
The Vols will likely be in the conversations for a handful of spots and that’s the case for “Tight End U” where Tennessee came in third in the rankings.
Here’s what CBS had to say about the Vols, who are very much anchored by Jason Witten in this category
“OK, the math spit out the Vols at No. 3 largely due to Jason Witten’s brilliant career, which overlapped the past decade used for this Tight End U analysis. Still, there have been other recent Tennessee tight ends to contribute in the NFL: Mychal Rivera, Luke Stocker and David Martin.”
There could be more to come for the Vols in the coming years. Rising junior Ethan Wolf has shown plenty of upside in his first two years on campus and very well could be in the NFL at some point. Converted receiver Jason Croom also could turn into an intriguing prospect.
Recently-graduated senior Alex Ellis tested very well at UT’s recent Pro Day and may get some form of NFL opportunity as well.
One other plus for Tennessee in this conversation is that Miami claimed the top overall spot. Who coached the Hurricanes’ tight ends over the past couple years? None other than current UT tight ends coach Larry Scott. So the No. 3 school in the Tight End U conversation is now being coached by the former coach of the No. 1 school – not a bad recruiting pitch as the Vols look for their next stud at that position.
