A few quick notes and observations from the practice field on Tuesday afternoon:
Smokey gray returns: The offense won the scrimmage on Saturday, meaning the players on that side of the ball got to again wear the Smokey gray helmets and orange jerseys this week.
Loud noises!: For the first time in awhile, Butch Jones brought back the random collection of loud noises (such as dogs barking, jet engines, etc.) that play over the loudspeakers on the practice field. It’s something we haven’t heard as much recently, but Jones has said in the past that he likes to do that to test the team’s focus and to prepare the players for hostile environments.
Punting Prowess: We haven’t discussed the punters very much this spring because there isn’t a lot of doubt about that position, but I spent a few minutes watching Trevor Daniel and Tommy Townsend, and was impressed by both. Daniel, who is entering his redshirt junior season, should have the job locked down for the next couple years, but Townsend showed some good hang time on Tuesday as well and should be a great replacement in the next couple years.
Nice catches: We’ll have some video later, but Josh Smith and Jauan Jennings were among the players who had really nice catches in individual drills. Smith, who we’ve said multiple times this spring is catching everything in sight, had an especially nice one-handed grab on Tuesday.
We’ll have more from Kahlil McKenzie and Butch Jones following practice.
