Practice Notes: 3/29/16

Helmets-1

A couple quick notes from the practice field as the Vols worked out on Tuesday afternoon on Haslam Field.

Smokey gray surprise: A little bit of a change-up: The Vols’ offense practiced in their Smokey gray helmets on Tuesday afternoon. Butch Jones said after practice that it was a reward for the offense winning the scrimmage on Saturday.

Green team: Linebacker Colton Jumper, receiver Jauan Jennings and running back John Kelly were all in green, non-contact uniforms on Tuesday.

Dobbs out: Quarterback Joshua Dobbs didn’t practice on Tuesday, but there’s no cause for concern there: he’s just accepting an award in Georgia and will be back later in the week. That led to extended reps for quarterback Quinten Dormady, who is working to solidify himself as the backup heading into 2016. Butch Jones announced after practice that quarterback Sheriron Jones will be out for the rest of the spring.

Who stood out:

• OT Drew Richmond: The redshirt freshman seemed to be having a good day based on the limited drills the media was allowed to see on Tuesday. He drew praise from offensive line coach Don Mahoney a couple different times and appears to be building on his solid overall spring as he looks to position himself to have a chance to compete for a starting job in the fall.

• DB Rashaan Gaulden: Gaulden also drew some praise and was moving around well and made a couple nice plays during the open portion. I also thought he had a good scrimmage on Saturday, laying at least one big hit on “Competition Saturday” in Neyland Stadium .

• DE Austin Smith: He’s another guy I think is putting together a really good spring as we get close to the halfway mark. He looks relatively natural at defensive end for a guy who just started playing there, and he’s in the backfield a lot when he gets his opportunities.
