The three-year starter and native of Jonesboro, Ga., developed into one of the top cover corners in the league over the past couple seasons, moving into fourth place in Tennessee history in passes defended with 32, one ahead of legendary defensive back Eric Berry.
Sutton has also collected 104 tackles, 11 TFLs, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and six career interceptions in his three years in Knoxville.
He also became a feared punt returner over the past couple years, leading the nation in 2015 with 18.7 yards per punt return and setting a Tennessee record with 467 punt return yards in 2015, surpassing Bobby Majors’ 1969 mark of 457. Sutton’s 16.0 yards per punt return average over the course of his career also currently ranks first in school history.
Sutton’s return, along with linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin’s decision to return for his senior season, gives Tennessee eight returning starters on the defensive side of the ball, which will be led by new defensive coordinator Bob Shoop. The Vols also return nine starters on the offensive side of the ball, and with Sutton and kick returner Evan Berry back, Tennessee will also have the leading punt and kickoff returner in the nation from 2015 on their 2016 roster.
