Report Card for the Vols’ 2015 Season

Kirkland-1

Overall

When looking back at the 2015 season, you can almost divide it up into two halves for two separate seasons. The first seven games were about as heart-breaking as you can imagine, as the Vols surrendered multiple multi-score leads only to lose close ballgames. Tennessee’s four losses all came in the first seven games of the year, and the losses were by a combined 17 points. But the second half of the season looked much better for the Vols, as they won the final six games on the year including blowouts against Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and bowl opponent Northwestern.

The 2015 season will always be a season of “what could have been” because of those close losses. The Vols clearly had the talent to be in those games and win them, but for various reasons they just didn’t. But the season was far from a failure either, as signified by the impressive Outback Bowl win over Northwestern. Progress was definitely made in 2015, and it could be seen in terms of win totals and on the field when the Vols played. But the missed opportunities will always hurt, and they keep this grade from being better than what it could have been.
