6. The receivers were more potential than production
I remember having this debate over the summer on RTI Radio – are the receivers more potential or production? Well, it’s a complicated answer that has to take into consideration injuries, attrition, quarterback play and a variety of other factors, but at the end of the day, the receivers were certainly more unfulfilled potential than production. Von Pearson rebounded after missing the offseason amidst legal questions to lead the team in receptions and yardage with 36 catches for 377 yards. Those numbers aren’t bad, but not what you’re looking for from your leading receiver.
A hamstring issue prevented Preston Williams from ever getting going. Josh Malone made a few big catches, but was never a consistent No. 1 target. Josh Smith had his moments, though Jauan Jennings only made 13 catches after standing out in fall camp. Injuries kept Marquez North and Jason Croom from making any kind of impact. And Pig Howard let this group down when he was dismissed from the program without making any kind of mark this year. It’s telling that three of UT’s top six receivers were actually running backs or a tight end. That potential is still there going forward, but this group needs more production in 2016.
