Option 3: Hire a direct replacement for Mark Elder
There’s also an argument to be made that the Vols – a team that was so successful on special teams in 2015 – shouldn’t try to get too fancy and should go out and find the best special teams guru they can to keep that success rolling. Ideally, this candidate would be able to coach tight ends as well, making him a direct replacement for what they’re missing with Elder.
The name that always seems to come up is Cowboys’ assistant Rich Bisaccia, who has worked in the SEC in the past and currently serves as the special teams coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. This might be a long shot, but perhaps some kind of title like Special Teams Coordinator/Associate Head Coach or something along those lines with a nice salary could entice somebody like Bisaccia. I use him really more as an example though for the direction they could go as opposed to saying he’s a serious candidate. There are likely dozens of candidates around college football that have experience overseeing special teams that could be in the conversation.
