Option 2: Bring in another quarterbacks coach
The concept would be the same here as option No. 1, but if for whatever reason Jones didn’t view Sheridan as a good fit, or even if he left for another opportunity, Jones could follow the same plan and bring in more of a proven quarterbacks coach and then re-structure the staff accordingly. One name that’s floated out there is former North Texas offensive coordinator/interim head coach Mike Canales.
Jones stumped for Canales to get that job full-time after Tennessee beat the Mean Green 24-0 in Knoxville this year. And Canales has an impressive career résumé that includes experience in the NFL and as a quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator and head coach at the collegiate level. He also worked with Philip Rivers at NC State from 2001-02. Canales is just one example of a name they could bring in, but the concept of bringing in an outside, experienced quarterbacks coach to work with Joshua Dobbs, Quinten Dormady, Sheriron Jones, Jarrett Guarantano and other future Vol quarterbacks certainly would make sense.
