Friday Top 10: Vols Who Could Redshirt

9. DE Curt Maggitt

Curt Maggitt-1

This is a tricky one that we get a lot of questions about it. The NCAA does occasionally grant waivers to players for a sixth-year of eligibility when they’ve missed two seasons for reasons out of their control. Curt Maggitt sat out all of 2013 with a knee injury and could miss all but two games (which qualifies as a “full season” by medical redshirt standards) in 2015 with a hip injury. In theory, if he doesn’t return this year, he could petition the NCAA for another year. It would then be up to the generally-inconsistent decision making of the NCAA, though there is plenty of recent precedent, such as its ruling on Florida TE Jake McGee, that would give UT hope that it could happen.

But would Maggitt want it? That’s another question. Hypothetically, if he stays another season, he’d be 24 by the time the 2017 NFL draft rolls around and already with a few significant injuries in his past. Maybe it’d be best if he gave the NFL a shot now, just one season removed from his 11-sack performance in 2014. That’ll be a personal decision for him, and there’s also the chance that he could be healthy enough at the tail end of this season, so there are a lot of moving parts here, but it is a possibility.
