Checking the Film: A Closer Look at UT’s 28-27 Loss to Florida

Fourth Quarter

15:00: Again, Dobbs goes all out to get the first down when Florida haas it stopped. This play is all Dobbs.

This has been just a masterfully executed drive by Tennessee’s players. You can tell that Tennessee’s offense just wants it more than Florida’s defense at this point. They are just draining the will from the Gator defense by getting tough yards and out-fighting defenders. This should have been the “game-winning” drive.

11:11: I don’t know why the coaches didn’t let Dobbs throw more in the fourth quarter. This is an absolute strike to a wide-open Ethan Wolf for a HUGE first down. Dobbs was poised and accurate with the throw, and Florida’s defense isn’t providing the same pressure they were in the first quarter.

10:25: Florida was expecting pass, and the Vols hit them with the inside run that Hurd bounces outside for a touchdown. The decision to kick the extra point notwithstanding, this was a great play.

At this point, Tennessee players are feeling it, the Florida crowd is out of the game, and there is blood in the water.

Florida is just nickel-and-diming Tennessee’s defense. Which, if you’re John Jancek, you’re fine with. Jancek is calling this drive like he knows what’s coming.

But then…

6:25: Sometimes players just make great plays. That’s what happens here. Grier gets pressure and floats a ball to his TE, and it’s probably the best throw he made all day. It’s high and outside, which gives JRM – who had good coverage – no play on the football. Florida moves the chains and ultimately scores a touchdown.

And again…

So close.

Tennessee gets the ball back with a six-point lead. All they need is a first down and the game is essentially over. The coaches have had over six minutes of gametime to draw up a few plays to get that first down, but the results are less than inspiring. Run right, run up the middle, and then this QB sweep to the short side of the field that was designed, according to Joshua Dobbs’ comments at the press conference, to “keep the clock moving.”

2:30: Vols punt.

Tennessee demolishes a screen pass, forces an incompletion to DeMarcus Robinson, and then pressures Grier into a throw-away to bring up 4th and 14 for the ballgame.

This happens…

Tennessee sends three and drops eight without Cam Sutton on the field. Poor coverage and worse angles lead to Florida’s longest play of the day that would have won the game for Tennessee with a stop.

1:21: Tennessee gets the ball back and goes to work. They convert on 1st and 10 with an 11-yard pass to tight end Ethan Wolf, but, for some reason, the clock fails to stop on the first down and the Vols are robbed of 11 seconds. The refs SHOULD have reset the game clock here, but nobody on Tennessee’s sideline was aware of the error. Tennessee was basically robbed of another play.

The refs wind the clock, but Tennessee is whistled for a false start before they can get off their second play of the drive. At this point, the Vols have run ONE play in :25 seconds – that one play being a first down – and are now forced to use one of their remaining two timeouts to avoid a :10 second runoff.

:56: Great play by Dobbs and Kamara keeps hope alive.

:29: Dobbs fumbles out of bounds, but the clock winds at the spot of the ball. Tennessee runs another play, but fails to get out of bounds, and then all hell breaks loose.

Florida players leave the bench and storm the field to celebrate the win, but Tennessee takes their last timeout to save ANOTHER :10 second runoff. The Gators are not penalized, and Medley trots out to attempt the game-winner. The Gators come out with 12 men on the field, but McElwain takes a timeout to avoid the penalty.

:03: Heartbreak.
