Checking the Film: A Closer Look at UT’s 28-27 Loss to Florida

Third Quarter

15:00: Just a great start to the half for the Vols as Jalen Hurd picks up 21 yards practically on his own.

12:38: This play call is pretty terrible, to be honest. A slip pass to your running back on 3rd and 4 that he catches SIX yards behind the line of scrimmage is about as timid as it gets. Luckily for DeBord and Jones, Alvin Kamara is a stud and is able to slip his defender in the open field and turn on the jets for the first down.

11:47: Tennessee gets inside Florida’s 30 here and has a golden opportunity to put the game nearly out of reach. The Vols have momentum, Florida’s defense is already gassed, and a touchdown gives Tennessee a 17-point lead in the second half AT THE SWAMP. But, instead of taking a shot to the end zone, the offense goes with a counter-run, an incomplete slant to the TE (Ellis, not Wolf), and a busted screen that Dobbs nearly turns into a first down by scrambling back across the field. They don’t take a shot down the field, even though they have a 10-point lead. It’s just surprising that even with the momentum and confidence built in the first half, AND a 10-point lead, that the Vol offense doesn’t even try to get a look at the end zone here.

8:01: This is a play that you almost wish had never happened. Tennessee gets pressure by sending just three pass-rushers after Grier on 3rd and 7, and Kyle Phillips is able to trip him up for the sack. This exact call will give the Gators their go-ahead touchdown late in the 4th quarter.

7:09: Tennessee goes to the well one too many times with the Dobbs keeper and gets burned. It’s 2nd and 12 – a prime passing situation – but conservative football appears to have set in with a 13-point lead…So they elect to run Dobbs. In fairness, this play killed Florida in the first half, but the Gators were ready for this one. Dobbs gets smashed trying to do a bit too much, fumbles the football, and the Gators recover to set up a touchdown that cuts Tennessee’s lead to 20-14.

6:12: This one is hard to fathom. Butch Jones calls a timeout as Florida is lining up for a 42-yard field. Jones said after the game that he called the timeout because he felt like Florida was lining up for a fake…but we see on TV that McElwain is clearly screaming “field goal” at his team. Regardless, you don’t need to take a timeout here. This isn’t a “must block” field goal, so the Vols should have just called a safe coverage to prevent a fake. But…they don’t, and McElwain draws up a 1st down play.

4:44: It’s 3rd and 9, your lead is now just six points, and the coaches run a quarterback draw in a 5-wide look. Florida knows whats coming and tackle Dobbs for a loss of five.

3:09: Another three-man rush nearly results in a sack on 3rd and 9.

1:40: Jalen Hurd and Joshua Dobbs gave their all for Tennessee on Saturday. On this play, Hurd should have been stopped short of the line TWICE, but somehow fights his way for a first down.
