Preston Williams-1

 Receivers/Tight Ends

After facing as much scrutiny as any group over the past week, the receivers got plenty of opportunities to work on getting off man coverage and getting open in a game where the Vols clearly wanted to make the passing game a point of emphasis. The results weren’t perfect, but Tennessee at least got plenty reps and showed some signs of progress in this area. Eight total receivers/tight ends made at least one catch, with Josh Malone leading the way in catches with four. But it was freshman Preston Williams who really stepped up, catching two touchdowns and making the biggest play of the night in the passing game with a 49-yard reception against pretty tight coverage. One of the most purely talented players on the team – Williams could be somewhat of an x-factor for the passing game going forward. It was a good night of work for this group, though most everybody understands that true improvement will have to be proven against a much better defense next week.
