Defensive Line
The Vols began life without Curt Maggitt with LaTroy Lewis making somewhat of a surprise start at defensive end spot opposite of Derek Barnett. He had a good showing, recording four tackles and showing why the coaches put some faith in him. That spot will likely be a rotation going forward between Lewis, Corey Vereen, Dimarya Mixon and Kyle Phillips. It was somewhat of a quieter night for Phillips than expected in a game some predicted he would break out. Owen Williams and Kendal Vickers were solid at defensive tackle for a few series before giving way to Kahlil McKenzie and Shy Tuttle for much of the rest of the evening. That freshman duo is continuing to develop and McKenzie made his first big play as a Vol, forcing a fumble in WCU territory that led to an easy score for the Vols. While this group recorded no sacks, overall, it did most of what it wanted for much of the evening outside of just a handful of plays.
