Checking the Film: A Closer Look at UT’s Overtime Loss to OU

Second Quarter

13:48: More of the same from the crowd, and more of the same for Oklahoma’s offense. This is a 3rd and 10, and nobody on Oklahoma’s line could hear the person next to them. Result = incompletion and a punt.

13:32: Tennessee gets the ball back in great field position and immediately takes a shot downfield to Josh Smith. Great pocket and a great throw-and-catch for the first down. Also, a great call by DeBord to open it up on first down when the Vols had been running.

12:21: It was a short drive, but a great one. The mix of run and pass and here the ball was going had Oklahoma guessing. Tennessee’s offense was clearly in rhythm and ends with a walk-in touchdown from Joshua Dobbs. Hard to believe that an offense could have this much success on early drives and then suddenly go ice-cold without a change in the game plan.

Tennessee now leads 17-0 and Oklahoma has yet to figure out what the Vols are trying to do. They are sending pressure like they always do, but the Vols are playing aggressive and beating the Sooners at their own game.

9:18: Cam Sutton (correctly) allows a Sooner punt to land inside the 10-yard line, but the Sooners get a great bounce and the Vol offense is forced to start their drive on their own 5-yard line. Field position pretty much stopped this drive before it started. Some pre-snap confusion between the receivers may have resulted in the 3rd down incompletion, but the Vols were wise not to get too cute with the play-calling here.

Trevor Daniel is a monster.

7:10: Tennessee gives up a first down, and Jalen Reeves-Maybin comes out of the game. With JRM and Darrin Kirlkand Jr. now out, and Colton Jumper and Cortez McDowell in at LB, the Sooners dial up a play-action pass and hit Neal for almost a 30-yard completion.

6:13: This is a killer. An 8-yard loss turns into a 3-yard gain, and 3rd and 16 becomes 3rd and 5. Derek Barnett jumps offsides on the next play and the Sooners are awarded a first down on a drive that would lead to 3 points.

5:05: This is a first down and possibly a touchdown if Corey Vereen doesn’t blow it up and force the bad throw.

4:50: Tennessee’s offensive line does a nice job of picking up the blitz, but the receivers don’t get open and Dobbs is forced to scramble. The Sooners stop a zone read on second down, and then sack Dobbs on third down. Tennessee had seven men in to block five Oklahoma defenders, and still can’t protect Dobbs long enough to allow him to survey the field. Vols forced to punt.

3:05: Colton Jumper gets abused by Sterling Shepard on a slant route. He’s a liability in coverage when matched up against receivers.

2:07: Another false start by Oklahoma’s offense.

1:33: The Sooners elect to go for it on 4th and 4, and Emmanuel Moseley makes a great play to get his hand in on Sterling Shepard and knock the pass down. Moseley had a really nice first half after a poor performance the against Bowling Green.

:46: A sack here ruins any chance for Tennessee to steal some points before halftime. Coleman Thomas gets blown up and the middle-screen to Jalen Hurd is toast before it ever gets started. Oklahoma guarded this perfectly.
