High marks for the debut of offensive coordinator Mike DeBord, who orchestrated a masterful offensive attack against the Falcons. That side of the ball clearly got it done. But there are a ton of questions on the defensive side of the ball and defensive coordinator John Jancek, viewed as one of the strengths of the staff, has a lot of work to do this week. The Vols were out of position, had poor technique and just got beat up and down the field on several occasions. It wasn’t shocking to see the Falcons move the ball some, but it was surprising and concerning to see it to that extent. The unusual suspension to defensive backs coach Willie Martinez may have played a part, and the Vols will be glad to have their eyes in the sky back against Oklahoma next week. Openers are always tough to manage as it is. Throw in some adversity and a long lightning delay, and this was a bigger-than-expected challenge for this staff.
