9. Litmus Test
Butch Jones can recruit. There’s zero doubt about that. And Jones has proven he has what it takes to run a program, to wield a level-laden and bureaucratic entity which is exactly what Tennessee Football is. Another thing Jones and his staff have shown in their first two years is that they’re very competent when it comes to game day. But are they excellent? Plenty of reasons to believe they could be. And this schedule looks to have plenty of games that will be close ones, indeed. Oklahoma, at Florida, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and at Mizzou are all winnable games. One thing’s for certain. That list contains at least two, probably three barn burners. It will be interesting to see how this staff fares in those close ones. We’ve seen what this staff can do with a team that’s lucky to compete in a lot of its games. They fared nicely. Now it’s time to see how this staff fares with a team that should compete in virtually, if not literally, all of its games.
