5. The West is good – and confusing
Alabama will win the West, but Auburn will win the whole SEC. Make sense? That’s actually how the votes actually shook out from the media in the preseason order of finish predictions. That’s the first time that it’s happened like that, and it’s indicative of the fact there are several contenders in the West. Auburn and Alabama are clearly the top two, but all seven teams in the West got at least two first-place votes. Just a couple hundred points separated No. 3 (LSU) from No. 6 (A&M) with Arkansas and Ole Miss lumped in the middle of those two. Mississippi State came in last, but not many teams around the nation picked at the bottom of their division have a Heisman candidate quarterback like Dak Prescott. The West is loaded and could go a number of different directions.
