Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine is a beast at 5-11, 240 pounds who rushed 263 times for 1,713 yards and 21 touchdowns as a freshman in 2014. The Vols got a small taste of what he can do last year in Norman when he rushed nine times for 67 yards. That was before Perine really took off and ended up breaking the NCAA single-game rushing record (427) yards against Kansas later in the season.
He’s a Heisman contender heading into 2015, one of the best players Tennessee will see and somebody the Vols will need to limit if they want to beat the Sooners in Knoxville on Sept. 12 of this year.
All that to say, he’s really, really good.
But Tennessee has a pretty good player on defense as well in Derek Barnett. Perhaps you’ve heard of him. He’s received numerous Preseason All-America honors and is viewed as one of the best edge rushers in the country. NFL scouts are drooling over him and NFL.com just named him as one of 10 edge rushers to watch in college football in the 2015 season after his breakout campaign that included 10 sacks and 20.5 TFLs as a true freshman.
The problem, as we learned on Twitter, however, is that while you likely know who Barnett is, it appears that Perine does not.
I have no idea how serious he’s being, but a couple takeaways here. First, if you’re a big-time college football player, probably don’t respond to rival fans, especially ones with the name @DrunkVolFan on Twitter.
Secondly, learn who your opponents are. Google is your friend if you don’t know at first glance. Don’t be stupid, or else you might end up on the 2015 version of Barnett’s highlight film.
And if you were wondering, Barnett favorited it on Twitter, so he’s definitely seen it.
