The annual Rocky Top League is underway at Knoxville Catholic with games going every Monday and Wednesday until the finals on July 1. Check in with RockyTopInsider.com for game capsules and updates from some of the current Vols as well.
H3 vs. Rice Buick GMC (6:00 pm)
Tennessee newcomer Admiral Schofield scored 29 points on 13-25 shooting (3-6 from 3) and made a couple of big buckets late in H3’s 133-130 victory over Rice Buick GMC. He hit a couple of extremely tough step back jumpers and was aggressive off the bounce throughout the game. Schofield is an intriguing prospect. With the frame of a power forward but the height of a shooting guard or small forward, he’s a bit of a tweener. Through four games he has proven that his athleticism is underrated – he has a quick first step and can elevate quickly. Working on some back to the basket moves would certainly help his game translate to the college level.
Kevin Punter, playing alongside Schofield, had a game high 40 points on 13-21 shooting. He was 4-9 from 3 and 10-11 from the charity stripe. Punter leads the league in scoring and certainly looks primed to take more of a leadership role this season. Vols Detrick Mostella (31 points on 11-22 shooting) and Derek Reese (35 points on 12-22 shooting) helped keep Rice Buick GMC in this one until the end.
Knoxville News Sentinel vs. Tillman (7:30 pm)
Former Vols Bobby Maze and JaJuan Smith laced them up for the Knoxville News Sentinel and showed flashes of the brilliant play that once led Tennessee basketball to historic success. Maze recorded 20 points (7-16 shooting) and Smith added 12. Vol guard Devon Baulkman looks to be completely recovered from the shoulder injury that ailed him last season – he scored a game high 39 points. Incoming Vol power forward Ray Kasongo threw down a couple of electrifying slams on the way to 22 points on an efficient 11-15 shooting. The combined efforts of Maze, Smith, Baulkman and Kasongo couldn’t lift the New Sentinel to a victory.
Tillman, thanks to 30 points from Knoxville native Jalen Steele and 24 points from Vol guard Robert Hubbs, earned the 142-128 victory and moved to 4-0. Hubbs took charge late in the game when he either scored or assisted on at least 14 consecutive points. He was also an efficient 6-12 from the 3-point line.
Campus Lights vs. DeRoyal (9:30 pm)
Vol guard Shembari Phillips didn’t quite have the same shooting stroke he showcased in previous nights, but he still scored 19 points in a losing effort for DeRoyal. His fellow freshman teammate Kyle Alexander turned in one of his better performances with 23 points on 9-14 shooting (1-3 from 3). Rebounds aren’t recorded in the Rocky Top League, but Alexander had close to 20 boards and was really effective around the rim. He clearly has tons of upside.
Campus Lights, behind 32 points from Armani Moore, earned the 100-92 victory.
