Tennessee announced a four-year basketball series with Georgia Tech that will begin in the 2015-16 season with a game in McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta on Nov. 16.
The Yellow Jackets will come to Knoxville during the 2016-17 season, with a return trip to Atlanta scheduled for 2017-18 and the series finale set for the 2018-19 season in Knoxville.
Tennessee leads the all-time series with Georgia Tech 42-27, dating to 1921, according to the release. New Tennessee coach Rick Barnes has some experience against Tech, posting a 5-3 record against GT while he was the head coach at Clemson from 1994-98. The Yellow Jackets were 12-19 (3-15 ACC) in their fourth year under head coach Brian Gregory in 2014-15.
The Vols haven’t announced their full non-conference schedule for the 2015-16 season yet, though Barnes has historically sought out a tough out-of-conference slate. Barnes said in late April at the Big Orange Tip-Off Club in Knoxville that he plans to play a “national” schedule. The Vols will play in the fourth annual Barclays Center Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28 with Cincinnati, Nebraska and George Washington also scheduled to attend.
Other possible reported future non-conference opponents include Gonzaga, North Carolina and Maryland. The Vols announced their full 2014-15 non-conference schedule on June 25 of last year, meaning this year’s schedule will likely be announced before too long.
Per new SEC scheduling policies for the 2015-16 season, we also know the Vols will play the other 13 SEC teams at least once with two games guaranteed against Kentucky, Vanderbilt and South Carolina.
