2. Gus Malzahn

Looking for somebody who could challenge Saban for the top spot in the coming years? Look just down the road in the state of Alabama at Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, who was well known as one of the top assistants in college football before bumping up into a higher echelon by taking the Tigers all the way to the BCS National Championship game in the 2013 season before barely falling to Florida State.

He took a step back in 2014 with an 8-5 campaign, meaning the next couple years could determine if he’s more elite or middle-of-the-pack. But his decision to hire Will Muschamp at DC shows that he’s willing to make the necessary changes to keep his program near the top. Malzahn would have any offense near the top of the nation with a couple years of works.
