Not a real flashy pick. But when talking about guys who have the best chance to come in and start, Townsend has to be right at the top of the list. The top-10 punter walks into a wide open competition at UT after the departure of Matt Darr. He has a great chance to win it. Walk-on Trevor Daniel and Maryland graduate transfer Nathan Renfro will be the main competition, but there’s a good chance Townsend can follow Aaron Medley’s footsteps and solidify a key spot on special teams as a true freshman.

“[Townsend is] good punter, he’s consistent, he’s got a strong leg and a great upside, so I feel that he’s what you’re looking for as far as a punter,” special teams coordinator Mark Elder said at the end of spring practice. “He’s certainly going to be competing for that position. It’s not going to be his position, but he’s going to be competing for it and I think he has the capabilities to do that.”
