How The UT Undrafted Free Agents Fit In

2. Matt Darr – Miami Dolphins

Matt Darr-1

Current punters on the Dolphins’ roster:

Brandon Fields

Outlook: Fields, a 2013 Pro Bowl selection, struggled a bit in 2014, only netting an average of 38.6 yards per punt – good for just 25th in the NFL. His average of 46.3 yards per punt (12th in the NFL) was more respectable. The Dolphins considered cutting him over the offseason, but he restructured his deal to stick around. Darr doesn’t have quite that kind of leg, as he averaged 42.2 yards per punt as a senior with the Vols last year. His average, however, did go up every year, so perhaps there’s more room to grow.

Odds: You certainly see cases where the undrafted kicker or punter comes in and performs as well if not better than the veteran and steals a spot. But Fields saved the Dolphins money with his restructure, so Darr would have to make a compelling case to boot the veteran. Considering his average was over four yards shorter than Fields’ last year, that’ll be a tough task.
