7. There’s talent and variety at wide receiver

Pig Howard-1One glance at the wide receivers standing together paints a portrait of a diverse, talented unit. Your eye level will adjust from the diminutive Pig Howard and Johnathon Johnson to the monstrous Jason Croom and Marquez North to everything in between.

It’s hard to prepare for what’s coming. The Vols could easily trot out a Croom-North-Josh Malone trio that would be a size mismatch for any secondary in the country. But prepare too much for that and a smaller, quicker trio of Howard-Von Pearson-Josh Smith would cause issues as well.

Receivers coach and passing game coordinator Zach Azzanni likes to mix and match those skill sets to make it as difficult as possible for the defense to adjust. And to make it more challenging, the Vols love the fly sweep as well, adding another dimension to the rushing attack that defenses must account for.

It’s clear that this group is, for the most part, better known for its potential than actual production at this point. But maybe this is the year it clicks for several of them. The potential of the rushing attack should open up more space. It’s time for this group to take advantage.
