Mid-Spring Stock Watch

Stock Down

Coleman Thomas-11. OL Coleman Thomas: He’s involved in a pending legal case, making his future uncertain. But, even in the best of outcomes for him, the promising rising sophomore, who was competing at both center and right tackle, still will miss a lot of valuable reps. And in the worst case, he could be in for an extended, or even permanent, absence from the team. Not what anybody associated with Tennessee was hoping for this spring as the Vols look to improve their weakest unit from 2014.

2. Overall depth: The lack of depth has been well-documented and, much to Butch Jones’ chagrin, one of the biggest storylines of the spring. It’s hurt UT’s ability to go 11-on-11 and really to develop at the rate that the coaches would like to see this spring. Already dealing with over a dozen injuries coming into camp, the Vols have added Emmanuel Moseley (mono), Alvin Kamara (thigh bruise) and Thomas (legal) to the list of players who are missing some time this spring.

3. Dontavius Blair’s chances to start: Fans seem to take a strong stance on Blair – either declaring him the savior at left tackle or writing him off as a complete bust. And while the truth is probably somewhere more in the middle, those who had high hopes of Blair locking down a tackle job this spring are likely going to be disappointed. The 6-8, 300-pound former junior college transfer has spent more time with the second team and scout team than getting looks with the starters, at least in the periods viewed by the media.
