Holding Steady
1. QB Joshua Dobbs: There’s certainly a good case that Dobbs could go in the ‘stock up’ category. But after the way he finished 2014 and with the expectations many have put on him heading into 2015, it’s definitely a compliment to say that he’s staying steady and living up to that hype so far. He’s been great this spring. There are still traces of the occasional erratic accuracy and some mechanical issues, but, overall, Dobbs is slinging it all over the field, still as athletic as ever and is continuing to emerge as the leader/CEO quarterback that Butch Jones is looking for.
2. Veterans on defense: They’re not getting a lot of praise because their consistency has become expected, but healthy veterans on the defensive side of the ball such as linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, corner Cam Sutton and safeties Brian Randolph and LaDarrell McNeil just keep ticking. They’re all leaders in practice and are performing at a high level day in and day out.
3. RB Jalen Hurd: With all the buzz about Kamara, it’s hard to believe that Hurd is actually flying under the radar a bit this spring. The fact that he’s non-contact this spring certainly plays into that. But he looks good. He’s put on a touch of weight and still looks quick in drills. He’s not getting the opportunity to progress like he’d like and you can tell it’s hurting him. When the Vols were in the red zone during Saturday’s scrimmage, he was practically halfway on the field itching to get a rep in, but the coaches won’t let him do it. He’ll get a chance to unleash that energy in a few months, however.
