7. The defensive line has a chance to be deep
Looking at the defensive line this spring, it doesn’t have the look of a deep, loaded group. But what’s on the field now is only part of the equation of what will be there in the fall. So despite missing key pieces such as Curt Maggitt, Derek Barnett, Danny O’Brien, Corey Vereen, Kyle Phillips, Kahlil McKenzie and others, players such as Kendal Vickers, Dimarya Mixon, Shy Tuttle, Charles Mosley, LaTroy Lewis and Andrew Butcher are getting extended reps and the opportunity to build valuable experience.
When it all comes together, coach Steve Stripling will have a lot of options up front, possibly even the ability to go three deep at one of the most important units on the field.
Consider this very tentative, but the Vols could mix and match with something like this on the field and still have guys to spare:
1. Barnett, O’Brien, Williams, Maggitt
2. Vereen, McKenzie, Tuttle, Phillips
3. Lewis/Weatherd, Vickers, Mosley, Mixon
