4. Running backs are thin, but athletic

Alvin Kamara-1-6The athleticism and upside of the Jalen Hurd-Alvin Kamara duo is undeniable. Hurd, though wearing a non-contact jersey, looks to be in great shape and perhaps even a step quicker than last year despite putting on a little bit of good weight. Kamara looks the part of the five-star junior college transfer that he was. He has a sturdy build and explodes towards the line when he gets the ball. We’ll know more when contact picks up, but he certainly passes the eye test at that position.

The running backs group is noticeably small, however. Hurd and Kamara are the only two scholarship guys out there with a pair of walk-ons that the Vols likely wouldn’t feel good about putting in a game at this point. Some help is expected over the summer, but my initial impression of that group is a reminder that there’s a lot of talent at the top of the depth chart, and a ton of questions after that.
