Another offseason, another coaching search. Such has been the way of the world around Tennessee athletics. Tennessee basketball, just a year removed from a Sweet 16 appearance, is now looking for its third coach in a year after Donnie Tyndall was fired Friday during an early morning meeting with Dave Hart.
If you missed our first hot board, make sure to check that out. We also posted a pretty substantial update on where everything stands yesterday.
We’re starting to narrow and consolidate this list. Things have moved fairly quickly thus far but a few new candidates are still emerging.
One thing of note, if the Vols want a proven coach, they’re going to have to start investing more money in their basketball program. For the 2013-14 season, Tennessee ranked 74th nationally, and 13th in the SEC, in spending on hoops. Donnie Tyndall’s contract averaged $1.6 million annually and former head coach Cuonzo Martin was offered a contract in the $1.8 million range before leaving for California.
It’ll take significantly more than that to lure many coaches on this list. We’ve organized the board into three categories –realistic options, long shots and not coming.
Here are a few names to watch in the coming days and a few that Vol fans constantly reference.
