Status
It’s no secret that the Vols are searching for some real playmakers at wide receiver in 2016, and Diondre Overton is certainly a name to keep an eye on in the coming months. The Vols are currently in a tight battle with Clemson for Overton’s services, but as his stock continues to rise heading into his senior season, expect some other big-name programs to begin taking serious interest in Overton and his skill set. Overton was in Knoxville for Tennessee’s Junior Day in early March and came away impressed with his visit, but the Vols will have some work to do if they want to edge out the Tigers, who were among the first power-5 schools to offer him back in December.

 How He Fits

Don’t let his current recruiting rankings fool you…Diondre Overton has the potential to be one of the top receivers in the 2016 class. In his first year playing football, Overton hauled in 62 passes for 1,187 yards and eight touchdowns for Page High School as a junior. With another year of development under his belt and solid play at quarterback, expect those numbers to improve during his senior season.

Overton’s game is unique, in that he can do a variety of things very well – especially considering his size. He can use his 6’5 frame to out-reach defenders in traffic, but also excels running tunnel and bubble screens in tight spaces; setting up his blocks and getting the most out of every play. He runs almost effortlessly and has a gliding stride with deceptive speed once he hits the open field. He isn’t afraid to run routes over the middle and doesn’t shy away from contact before or after the catch. He is an above-average downfield blocker, and takes pride in springing his teammates free for a big play. As he continues to learn the game and the position, he has the potential to be a versatile playmaker at the next level.
