5. Safety
I’ve given you a few positions groups and hypothetical situations, but here’s a good old-fashioned man-on-man position battle between a veteran and a younger player. If last year was a good indication, Brian Randolph will play at one safety spot and rising senior LaDarrell McNeil will battle rising sophomore Todd Kelly Jr. at the other.
Kelly Jr., a local product and UT legacy, is probably the fan choice overall. And he’s no slouch. He made several big plays in 2014 as a true freshman, showing a ton of potential. But McNeil just keeps working, and after many assumed he would be out of the conversation in last year’s fall camp, he still started every game but one. Look for this battle to carry through spring, summer and possibly into the season again.
