Defensive Line
New additions: Kyle Phillips, Andrew Butcher, Quay Picou, Kahlil McKenzie, Shy Tuttle, Darrell Taylor
Daniel: I’m still amazed by what Tennessee was able to do at this position. It’s likely the best defensive line class in the nation and could be one of the best in UT’s storied history of defensive linemen. It starts with McKenzie – one of the nation’s best overall players, but Phillips and Tuttle are both elite players as well. All three could be in the rotation as true freshmen and they comprise the core of what could be one of the most talented defensive front in all of college football in a couple years. Add in Butcher, Picou and Taylor, who all have a lot of upside and can provide quality depth, and this is a virtually flawless group that could play a huge role in taking UT to the next level in the coming years. Grade: A+
Houston: This group has already been voted by some recruiting services as the best in the nation and I have zero arguments to the contrary. Tennessee signed three defensive ends and three defensive tackles – nice balance – and all six of these players are SEC-level talents. Kahlil McKenzie and Kyle Phillips need no introduction, but Quay Picou and Darrell Taylor are two highly underrated players. Picou is the perfect compliment to Shy Tuttle and McKenzie at tackle with his quickness, while Darrell Taylor’s speed and athleticism are perfect for a true pass-rushing end. Andrew Butcher, Phillips and Tuttle are already on campus and will all probably see significant snaps this season, but ruling out any of the others is an unwise move. If you win games in the trenches, then the Vols are going to win a bunch if this group pans out. Grade: A+
