Report Card: Vols 2015 Signing Class

Stephen Griffin-1

 Secondary

New additions: Stephen Griffin, Micah Abernathy, Justin Martin, Darrell Miller

Daniel: The addition of Martin about a month before signing day turned this group from decent to really good. Martin, one of the nation’s top junior college corners, will compete for a starting job the second he steps foot on campus this summer. I like Abernathy a lot as well and think he could be somewhat of as steal. I’m not sure exactly how they’ll use him – corner or safety – but he is one of those prospects that created big plays every time he stepped on the field in high school in all three phases of the game. I see Miller and Griffin as more depth/developmental guys when they first come in, but maybe one can step up and be a surprise like Cam Sutton was in 2013. Grade: A-

Houston: The Vols got a couple of players who can provide immediate help at corner in Micah Abernathy and Justin Martin, but Stephen Griffin and Darrell Miller each have the size, stride and potential to turn into some solid players for Tennessee with some development. Tennessee is set at safety for 2015 with Todd Kelly Jr., Brian Randolph and LaDarrell McNeil in the rotation, so they could afford to take a chance on long-term player like Griffin at the position. I would expect the other three to all get their first look at corner, with Martin and Abernathy the early favorites to earn some serious playing time in 2015 as Tennessee looks to shuffle things around to offset the loss of Justin Coleman. Getting Griffin enrolled early was just icing on the cake for this group. Grade: B+
