RTI Average: 4.5-stars

RTI’s Take:

Daniel: Philips has some freak-like attributes, coming into the program with fantastic size and athleticism that elevated him to five-star status among a couple recruiting services. He’s going to get limited work in the weight room and on the practice field this spring after a minor shoulder procedure, but his upside is enormous. It isn’t fair to expect Derek Barnett-like results from this fellow Middle Tennessee product – Phillips isn’t as college ready as Barnett was – but look for him to be a guy that the Vols use in packages to start, who grows into an every-down defensive end down the road.

Houston: The latest addition to the early enrollees list may prove to have the biggest impact. Missing spring practice will hurt his chances some, but, last I checked, Derek Barnett did pretty well without the benefit of going through spring practice in 2014. Can Phillips have that type of impact in 2015? I don’t think that’s fair, but he will definitely be a player that sees meaningful snaps in 2015.

Reed: Kyle Phillips had a fantastic season and was a massive late addition to this class. He should see snaps in special formations/situations this season and should prove to be a tough matchup off the edge. Phillips should challenge for a starting spot in 2016.
