Status
Tennessee is making a late push on Kelly to keep their odds of landing at least one more running back in this class high. It looks like it may be a tough pull to get Kelly out of Big 10 country, with the in-state Wolverines and Spartans and Minnesota all looking like possibilities land him, but by getting him on campus the Vols will have a shot to steal him away. Kelly was in Knoxville on the weekend of January 16th for his official visit and came away with great things to say about the Vols. He’s taking a visit to Minnesota the weekend of Jan. 24.

Outlook

The key word with John Kelly is potential. Kelly may not be a home- run threat every time he touches the ball, but he does run with good vision and has deceptive speed at the running back position. He see’s the field exceptionally well and has a unique ability to ‘feel’ the defenders around him, make the read, and then explode o the openings on the field. He can squeeze through tight spaces thanks to his stature, but also has enough power and burst to run through arm tackles and accelerate down the field. He has incredibly soft hands and has no trouble making difficult catches in and around the backfield or down the field when deployed as a pass-catching running back. His pass-blocking skills are adequate and he will only improve in that area as he increases his strength levels.
