1st Quarter

14:51: Rare missed tackle by Cam Sutton. Looks like he just didn’t square up and kind of dove at the Iowa receivers’ ankles. One of the few bad plays by the starting secondary.

13:51: Nice tackle for loss by Curt Maggitt here to help the Vols get their first stop of the game. Danny O’Brien gets pushed back some, but the key to the play is him absorbing two blockers and not allowing one of them to easily chip off to pick Maggitt up.

13:11: Nice pressure from Chris Weatherd against Outland Trophy winner Brandon Scherff to force the quick throw and end the drive.

12:26: Nice block from Jashon Robertson on the pull helps get Jalen Hurd 3 or 4 yards, but then Hurd turns on the jets to the outside to turn it into a large gain. The Vols hope that trend continues for years to come for those two freshmen.

11:35: We thought Iowa was in trouble after this play. A Hawkeyes’ defensive lineman has Dobbs lined up perfectly, but Dobbs is just too fast for the defense. He escapes, turns up field and creates a first-down run out of what should’ve been a huge loss.

10:15: Deceptive blocking by the Vols on this play. Two players pull to the right, throwing the defensive keys off. Several Hawkeyes flow to their left, but the ball actually goes to Hurd, who runs to his left (the defense’s right). Again, Hurd finishes the run with several broken tackles to make it a longer gain. When a play like this is successful, the defense will second-guess itself later in the game because what they’re seeing from the linemen may not be an indication of what’s happening with the play.

9:38: This is about as quick as we’ve seen Pig Howard play in his career. Not much Iowa can do on this play.

9:35: Just too much size and power from Hurd here, who takes it in from three yards out to give the Vols the early lead and a great start.

4:43: Big stop for the Tennessee defense here. Iowa has a nice little drive going that could’ve tied the game, but the Tennessee defensive front creates a pile at the line of scrimmage and defensive end LaTroy Lewis grabs 240-pound Iowa running back Mark Weisman and slings him down short of the marker.

4:35: Not a ton of space on this run, but Hurd bounces to the outside, gives a nice stiff-arm move and picks up another first down.

3:06: Nice lead block by Ethan Wolf and then it’s Hurd again powering through the defense. Iowa learns the hard way that you can’t go high and not wrap up on Hurd.

2:08: Big hit from Brian Randolph will make Iowa think twice about going over the middle again.

2:01: Tennessee goes with a 3-3-5 look on defense here and brings the blitz. Looks like Maggitt gets held at the top of the screen and the rest of the pursuit does a good job keeping Rudock from getting to the edge to force the incomplete pass.

1:53: Nice job by Cam Sutton sprinting up to field the short punt to give the Vols good field position, which sets up the touchdown on the next play.

1:44: Tennessee made this halfback pass look so easy, but it took execution from everybody. First, Dobbs makes a nice backwards pass to Marlin Lane. Remember, it’s a fumble if he misses him, so nice easy toss and Lane gets it cleanly. Tight end Brendan Downs does a nice job blocking to give Lane time. Lane then pulls up, makes a perfect throw to Vic Wharton, who did a great job faking the stalk block and slipping behind the defense for the touchdown to put UT up 21-0.

:43: No sack here, but Tennessee does a good job of getting C.J. Beathard on the run and making him uncomfortable – forcing the incompletion and another three-and-out.
