The 10 Biggest Vol Stories of the Year

Cuonzo Martin-14. Cuonzo Martin bolts for California

While Martin’s Sweet 16 run could only be described as a success, his third year in Knoxville seemed to take a toll on him. Loaded up with one of UT’s most talented rosters in years, the Vols were inconsistent, frustrating, and, in many people’s opinion, boring on the court. His even-keeled temperament also served as a stark contrast to his predecessor, fan-favorite Bruce Pearl. Fan support waned at times and Martin always appeared to be fighting an uphill battle in Knoxville. Dave Hart expressed satisfaction with the results of the 2013-14 season and said Martin would receive a new contract, but before those details were worked out, Martin resigned and took the head coaching position at California on April 15, leaving the Vols scrambling.
