2. Vols advance to the Sweet 16, narrowly fall to Michigan
After coming into the year with high expectations, an underwhelming regular season left the Vols as one of the final teams to make the NCAA tournament come March. Placed in the ‘First Four,’ UT had to play an additional first round game, barely squeezing by Iowa in an overtime contest. The Vols then rolled through Raleigh, blowing out UMass and Mercer en route to a Sweet 16 matchup with a talented Michigan team in Indianapolis. The Vols staged an impressive come-from-behind effort, but a late offensive foul on Jarnell Stokes on a bang-bang play essentially sealed the Wolverines’ 73-71 victory.
