5 Plays That Helped Send the Vols Bowling

3. Curt Maggitt and Derek Barnett unleash on Dylan Thompson in overtime

These are technically two plays, but it led to one result against the Gamecocks: An overtime win. After getting shredded all night on defense, the Vols responded in overtime after the offense hit a field goal to give the Vols a 3-point lead in the first overtime.

Derek Barnett and Curt Maggitt sacked SC quarterback Dylan Thompson on back-to-back plays and then the defensive line forced a third incompletion to make SC attempt a nearly-impossible field goal from about 57 yards out. It fell well short.

“I thought the defensive front, especially Curt Maggitt, came off the edge with a whole other presence in overtime,” said coach Butch Jones. “Same thing with Derek Barnett and you know, forced them to go all the way back.”
