Checking the Film: A Second Look at UT’s 24-17 win over VU

Pig Howard-1

Third Quarter

14:12: Curt Maggitt cuts it really close on hitting Patton Robinette after the slide, but gets away with it. Meanwhile, Derek Barnett gets pressure yet again, forcing Vanderbilt to hold and get flagged in the process.

11:44: Nothing going here for Vanderbilt. Great penetration by Tennessee’s defensive front, especially Danny O’Brien, and Robinette is stuffed for a big loss that ultimately led to the ‘Dores having to punt after a nice play by Cam Sutton on third down.

9:06: Bad job by the offensive line here. Vandy only rushes four men, but Jashon Robertson and Dylan Wiesman get split and Robertson reaches back to hold that man. Despite the penalty, Dobbs is still flushed out and has to throw away.

6:16: This turns out to be one of the plays of the game for Tennessee. Vandy, only down a score, is driving and actually has Steven Scheu open for what would’ve been a first down at about the UT 25. Robinette’s throw is a touched rushed by Owen Williams (Curt Maggitt was also held on the play, so it technically would’ve come back anyhow), it sails, Scheu can only deflect it and Todd Kelly Jr. makes an incredibly athletic interception, dragging his back foot just barely in bounds for the big play. The Vols would respond on offense right after this to go up two scores.

6:06: Joshua Dobbs gets the drive going on the first play, but credit Jashon Robertson and Brendan Downs with nice blocks to spring him. Robertson, especially, has a great pull and kick-out block of the play-side defensive end that knocks him completely out of the play.

4:48: This is a well-designed play here that could’ve gone for a touchdown. Dobbs rolls right and Marlin Lane sneaks out of the backfield to the left. Pressure disrupts the timing of the play, but Dobbs is able to escape and get just enough on his throw to get the ball to Lane down the left sideline for a nice gain.

4:14: The seniors got it done on this play. A lot of good blocking, but Jacob Gilliam getting to that second level, taking out a linebacker and doing a nice job with his hands to turn the defenders shoulders to give senior Marlin Lane a gap to run through really stands out. Hard running by Lane as well make him tough to take down with an arm tackle and set UT up with a first and goal.

3:26: Another strong pull from Robertson, but Dobbs gets the credit for finishing this one off. He’s engaged at about the 4-yard line, but slips off the tackle and takes it in for the touchdown.

3:06: Just a bad combination of plays from the linebackers here. Jakob Johnson gets beat in pass coverage and then Maggitt gives Steven Scheu an extra bump once the play is over to tack on 15 yards. It looks like Maggitt thought Scheu wasn’t down yet, and it’s hard to tell if a whistle blew or not, but none the less, Vandy picks up about 30 yards on the play to get its drive going after UT’s score.

2:33: No hands required on this Derek Barnett sack. He has a strong rip move to get past Andrew Jelks, who got injured on the play, and then actually rolls into Robinette to collect his 10th sack of the season.

2:05: Barnett perhaps gets a touch too aggressive here and opens up a lane for Robinette to run through to pick up the first down on third and long. Danny O’Brien also loops to his left, but Jordan Williams doesn’t cross over into O’Brien vacated gap and Robinette has a huge lane to run through.

1:39: Simply nobody home in the A gap here. Not sure what key Jakob Johnson was reading, but he ends up flying to his left out of the play and Ralph Webb blasts through the hole and finishes strong by getting the best of Todd Kelly Jr. at the end of the play.

:32: A fantastic run by Webb right here. The Vols read it correctly, Curt Maggitt and Jakob Johnson step up to make the tackle and he just bounces off them both, gets to the outside and again runs through Kelly for the Vandy touchdown. The Commodores don’t have a ton of weapons on offense, but Webb is a good looking player. Also, that simply doesn’t happen with A.J. Johnson in the game.

:22: Just not a great day throwing the ball for Dobbs. Should’ve probably been intercepted on this underthrow to Vic Wharton down the middle.
