Checking the Film: A Second Look at UT’s 24-17 win over VU

Derek Barnett-1-2

Second Quarter:

11:54: Poor decision by Dobbs after a bad snap. Dobbs tries to force a late pass to Ryan Jenkins as the pocket is collapsing and ultimately throws the interception. Even if Dobbs had been able to step into the throw, there was nearly no chance that this pass was going to result in a completion.

11:21: That’s a true freshman. Derek Barnett is just an excellent football player.

8:30: The drive stalls, but Matt Darr once again is able to flip field position in favor of the Vols. He booms a 55-yard punt in the air and Cortez McDowell simply demolishes the returner after a gain of two yards, at best. Special teams were critical in this game, and Tennessee won repeatedly in that area.

6:30: Vanderbilt goes for a home run here, but Justin Coleman stays at home and knocks the ball loose from Caleb Scott as the ball hits his hands. This was a nice call by Vanderbilt, but an even better individual effort by Coleman to knock it loose and prevent the big play.

5:35: Jakob Johnson bites on the play-action fake and loses Scheu on the sideline route. Before Johnson has time to recover, Robinette has already zeroed in on his tight end and hits him for a big touchdown.

4:58: Pretty cheap shot by the Vanderbilt defender to go low on Dobbs long after he has given himself up and run out of bounds on this play. Tennessee collects the fifteen yards and continues their drive.

3:12: This was truly a drive-changing play. The Vols were having some success running the football, but hitting this play added some confidence to the drive that may have been lacking after a few failed drives and an earlier turnover in the quarter. Dobbs does an outstanding job of buying time with his feet before finding Pig Howard open on a throwback across the field. This 34-yard pickup guaranteed the Vols at least a shot at a field goal, but also saved a lot of time and allowed them to be a little more creative in the red zone.

2:46: With Jalen Hurd out, this is exactly what the Vol offense needed from Marlin Lane. This play was blocked well enough for three or four yards, but Lane fights and battles his way to a 13-yard pickup and sets his team up with a first-and-goal from the three.

1:34: Really nice designed QB keeper here with Alex Ellis as a lead blocker. The defender actually reaches Joshua Dobbs at the two-yard-line, but Dobbs is able to go high and secure the touchdown. Tennessee enters halftime with a seven-point lead.
