Why: Suffered a torn labrum and only appeared in four games this season before undergoing season-ending surgery. By the letter of the NCAA law, he is not eligible for a hardship, though it’s so close that the Vols will appeal and are hoping to get a favorable ruling from the NCAA.
Future outlook: Bates was the most talented linebacker reserve the Vols had and was working his way into more and more playing time before the injury. He played on special teams and saw some situational first-team reps with the defense as well. A highly-ranked recruit and the son of former Vol great Bill Bates, Dillon Bates has a bright future, and with A.J. Johnson moving on after this year, the Vols will need several young linebacker to step up next year.
