4. Major Talent Upgrade
It’s no coincidence that we see an improved statistical team the very year a top-5 class gets added to the equation. It was Tennessee’s highest ranked crop of newcomers since 2007. And that’s no small feat given the recruiting trajectory that Butch Jones inherited. From 2010 to 2013, the final ranking of Tennessee’s recruiting class went from 9 to 13 to 17 to 21. You don’t need to be a math wiz to figure out that’s not a good trend.
Landing a top-5 class in 2014 was huge for this program, and that upgrade in talent will be an invaluable asset as Tennessee tries to run the table. Just think what adding yet another such class would do for the Vols? As of right now, UT is sitting again in the No. 5 spot for the 2015 rankings.
