5. Last year’s game
The vibe was unmistakable. The upstart Vols were on their way to giving Butch Jones his first signature win. Rajion Neal capped off a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a touchdown that gave Tennessee a 31-24 lead with under two minutes remaining. But Aaron Murray would lead the Bulldogs on a 10-play, 75-yard drive in just 1:54 to tie the game at 31 to send the game into overtime.
Tennessee got the ball first and didn’t appear to be deflated by Georgia’s late strike. Then, on 2nd and goal, Pig Howard got the ball on a perfectly executed sweep, made it to the corner and dove toward the pylon for what the capacity crowd assumed was the go-ahead touchdown.
But in a classic wear-your-cup moment, replay would prove that Pig lost control of the ball a nanosecond before crossing the goal line. After Georgia kicked the game-winning field goal on the ensuing possession, Vol Nation filed out of Neyland Stadium knowing Tennessee had come just inches short from scoring the upset.
Here’s hoping the ruler works in Tennessee’s favor tomorrow.
