8. at Georgia 2004
The Vols were a double digit road underdog to yet another eastern foe three years later when they faced the third ranked Georgia Bulldogs who entered the contest with a 17-game winning streak between the hedges. Freshman Erik Ainge was coming off a horrible performance in Knoxville against Auburn, but he led the Vols to an early 10-0 lead in his two-touchdown, turnover-free performance. The No. 17 Vols, catching twelve and a hook, left Athens the outright winner.
Honorable mention in this spot goes to the next contest in Athens, the 06 game, when Erik Ainge, Robert Meachem, Arian Foster and the rest of the No. 13 Vols hung 51 on No. 10 Georgia, Antonio Wardlow’s recovery of a blocked punt in the corner of the Bulldog end zone the signature play of a signature win. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that the 06 Georgia game was the last time the Vols beat a top-10 team on the road.
